The Spring Silhouette: What You Need To Know

The Spring Silhouette: What You Need To Know

Spring 2018 is a landmark.  Not only because we’ve probably seen the end of Prince Harry’s Las Vegas partying days, but because it heralds the start of a new look in menswear.

Every few years the silhouette starts to change.  You’ve probably noticed that there aren’t many guys wearing spray-on skinny jeans these days.  And as Sir Isaac Newton said, every action causes an equal and opposite reaction.

Hence, the slouchy spring (and summer… and 2019) silhouette. Get ready for it people, there’s a new look coming to town and you need to be prepared!

Read on for everything you need to know about what to look for, how to adapt what you’ve already got in your wardrobe, and what it’s worth investing in over the coming few months.

Trousers are getting slouchier.

The first thing you’ll notice is that trousers are getting looser.  Take a moment to breathe out if you’ve been feeling constricted by those tight jeans for far too long!
We’re heading back to the late 90’s and early 2000s with wider waistbands, pleats, bigger and deeper pockets, and an overall roomier fit.
It’s not ‘Dad-jean’ time again though, and thankfully there’s no sign of a boot-cut returning anytime soon.  The look maintains an hipster edge with slightly shorter hems, and turn ups in some cases too.
If you’re not ready for new trousers right now, don’t worry.  There’s still time. But keep an eye out for what other people are wearing on the streets, at the weekends and in the shops.  Start to notice what’s changing and get a sense of how you’d like to take on this style for yourself over the coming seasons.

Your shirts are great as they are - but it’s time to tuck them in

The slouchy bottom half works well with your existing wardrobe of shirts, t-shirts and jumpers (phew!)  But the baggy bottom half looks more balanced when you tuck the top half in, or keep it fitted. Easy!

Still happy with your existing jeans and trousers?  Then untucked is still cool - for now.

Throw on a contrasting textured jacket to keep off the chill

They don’t call it the ‘spring chill’ for nothing.  You’re still going to need a warmer layer on top to see you through to summer.

Your best bet is a comfortable jacket in a contrasting texture.  The Dalton Lightweight Jacket in olive is the perfect choice.  The colour works with everything, it’s shower-proof, and it’s the right shape to work with both the newer, slouchy-style trousers and your existing jeans.

Or if you have a bomber jacket hiding in the back of your wardrobe, now’s the time to bring it back out.
